An Analysis of The Stormcloak Rebellion

Preface

The Stormcloak Rebellion, as coined by the Imperials, is an uprising led by Ulfric Stormcloak after the recapture of Markarth (4E 176) from the Forsworn. In Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, at the start of the game, you are caught by an Imperial ambush trying to cross the border into Skyrim along with a band of Stormcloaks including Ulfric himself (4E 201). You are then brought by carriage to Helgen where you are taken to be excecuted along with them. But as you lay your head on the chopping block, a mighty beast attacks only thought to be old folk tale. A dragon. The dragon rips through Helgen like paper taking hundreds of lives. But you manage to escape! (praise the divines!), turns out Ulfric does as well, and the Stormcloaks use this as more fuel to grow their bomfire of propaganda.

This is probably the main talking point of the game, Imperials or Stormcloaks? A massive decision to make in the game and will effect the outcome of a surely imminent second Great War; possibly even the existence of mankind. There are many points that need to be dissected to decide which side would be in the best interest for everyone to win. Let's dig in!

Chapter I: The White-Gold Concordat

A central cause of the rebellion and many a Nord's main reason for their revolt. The White-Gold Concordat is a treaty that ended the Great War with the Aldmeri Dominion, it consists of three main agreements: most of southern Hammerfell to be given to the Dominion, the disbandment of the Blades and most controversially, the outlaw of Talos worship.
